On April 18, the Confucius Institute at Webster University held the 1st “Happy Chinese” Competition in Missouri to match the “Chinese Bridge” competition to be held in China this summer.

Some local college and high school students participated in the competition with some experienced Chinese language teachers invited to serve as judges. Combining Chinese language skills and Chinese talent together, the contest fully demonstrated contestants’ language and cultural proficiency, each of them attaching great importance to the event, doing a great amount of preparation before the contest. Dylan acted out a part of the movie Farewell, My Concubine. It is really amazing that he played two roles and depicted two totally different characters in such a lively manner. Luke recited a piece of famous poetry entitled “Qiangjinjiu” by Li Bai, incisively and vividly speaking of the tremendous vigor of the poet. Jennifer performed a famous Chinese piece entitled “The Moon Reflected on the Er-Quan Spring” with a violin, fully demonstrating the artistic conception of the music. Daniel sang a well-known Chinese song “The Liuyang River”. His humorous performance pushed the contest to a climax.

The contest provided American adolescents who have a love for Chinese language and culture a platform to show their talent, evoking a wide response among participants.
